February 2006 FAQ: Installation issues on WM 5.0 operating system

There is currently an issue with the way that Windows Mobile 5 handles installing software that may result in a failed installations if your device does not have enough available memory to complete part of the install. If you are experiencing difficulties installing our product(s), please turn off your device, wait 10 seconds, then soft-reset your device and try again.

The issue is caused by a crucial bug in the WM 5.0 installer which we are not able to overcome. This seems to mostly affect HTC devices (QTEK, Imate, MDA, XDA).  Microsoft is aware of this problem and will resolve this in future updates to Windows Mobile 5.0.

If you wish to first clear out any failed installations, please follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall all Resco software on the Pocket PC from Start > Settings > Remove Programs
  2. Using File Explorer on the Pocket PC go to \Program Files folder and make sure that it does not contain a Resco folder. If there is a Reco folder present, please delete it.
  3. Go to \Storage Card\Program Files folder and make sure that it does not contain a Resco folder. If there is a Reco folder present, please delete it. If you have another storage card or flash drive repeat previous step under its folder.
  4. Please turn off the device, wait about 10 seconds and then perform a soft-reset.

After cleaning up all the remnants of the failed Resco Software you should be able to install (or upgrade) it again. We hope this will help as a temporary workaround until Microsoft releases the fix for this issue to the OEMs who in turn will make it available for customers to download.

If you would like to install new Resco applications in addition to several other Resco applications you may already have, these steps might look a bit daunting for you (as it might be quite a lot of work). However, you can try another method to avoid the same installation problems. We have found that it is sufficient to rename the \Storage Card\Program Files\Resco folder ( e.g. to Resco2) prior to the installation, then the installation should be successful.

  1. Please make sure that the previous version of the application is not installed (if it is, please uninstall it first).
  2. Turn off the device, wait 10 seconds, and then perform the soft-reset.
  3. Open the default file explorer and choose Menu/Show all files
  4. Decide which storage you will use for the installation (whether main storage or storage card).
  5. Go to the chosen storage and locate the subfolder Program Files on it.
  6. If it contains the subfolder Resco, please rename it to let's say Resco2
  7. Try to run the installation - it should be successful now
  8. Open the file explorer again and navigate to the Resco2 folder
  9. Select all files, tap'n'hold on the selection and choose "Cut"
  10. Navigate back into the newly recreated Resco folder within Program Files.
  11. Tap'n'hold anywhere within the Resco folder and choose "Paste". If you are asked to overwrite something choose "Yes" or "OK" (you might observe the file date to decide whether to overwrite or not).
